True Colors Worksheets Session 3 This week we read chapters 4-6 of True Colors: Landry's True Colors Series: Book One. In this portion of the book, Landry has several experiences where her old “best friends” Ericka and Tori are loudly talking about her where she (and others) can overhear them. They make fun of her hair, what she is wearing (even though they all have a school color code/uniform), and Ericka steps on the back of Landry’s shoe in the hallway to try and trip her. Landry feels hurt and humiliated by their treatment. Why do you think Ericka and Tori are resorting to mean girl tactics with Landry? How would you handle these situations if you were in Landry’s position? Getting talked about is never fun and I have had my share of experiences with it. Is this something you’ve gone through? Write privately about a time you’ve dealt with it and see if it helps to get it out. Sometimes we joke with our friends about someone else and think it’s not a big deal, but we might be the cause of someone else’s hurt feelings. Have you been on the other side of that and made someone else feel bad? What are some ways you could make it up to that person and make sure that you don’t do it again? We don’t always realize that our “playful” jokes can hurt other people’s feelings. What are some ways to be more mindful of how we treat others? Ashanti has become a good friend to Landry, but then she is out of the picture when she gets sick and has to miss a lot of school. This means Landry is once again on her own and struggling to find her place in the cafeteria. List some of the reasons why Ashanti is a good friend for Landry. Compare those to the friendships you see Landry having with Tori and Ericka. I created the character Ashanti with characteristics of different girls I knew back then. I went through situations in the past where I left toxic friend groups and had to go and make new friends. It’s hard to step out of your comfort zone and get to know new people. Have you ever had to start over and make new friends because you either moved or were in a class where you didn’t have your closest friends already with you? Write about your situation and what you learned from it. With Ashanti home from school, Landry tries to find new people to sit with at lunch, but Halle and Maggie aren’t interested in hanging out with her and she feels ignored at their lunch table. Write about a time you felt left out in a situation. Feeling unwanted hurts, but sometimes we’re so busy with our own friends that we don’t realize that someone else might feel left out by us. What are some ways you can make sure someone feels welcome to join you and your friends? Behind the Scenes: In this section, Landry’s teachers have been changing their seats in class. It fills Landry with anxiety to know she might end up at a table with someone who makes her feel uncomfortable. She worries both times that she might end up near her ex-friends or near another mean girl or mean boy. I went through these very scenarios in my own life in middle school. In fact, even though years have passed, I remember very clearly how anxious I was when my teachers switched out seats. I would hold my breathe and pray that I’d end up next to someone nice. Extra activity: Since you are home from school, can you reach out to a classmate you don’t normally hang out with or talk to very much? Maybe you could send a message to someone you’d like to get to know better who isn’t in your friend group. You might end up making a really good friend. I’d love to hear how it goes if you’d like to put a comment down below or on my social media pages! Read chapters 7-10 for next time!
