The rule of three! How to win at life.
There are three types of business—your business, God’s business, and my business. I recently learned this from Byron Katie, whose book, “Loving What Is,” helped me shift my mindset about what I was capable of. Like driving a car but focusing on the rearview mirror, if I try to control what other people behind me do, I will crash, or at the very least, have a miserable road trip. My job consists of looking out the windshield to control my car. I have to do my business. Can I control what others do? No. Can I control what I do? Absolutely. Can I control what thoughts I listen to? Yes, ma’am. Is it my business to determine what obstacles I face or to control the weather? Nope. Does my business include my attitude and my willingness to show up, dress up, and shine on? Oh, my friend, yes. You do your business.
You’ve got this marvelous giftedness, personality, and unique brilliance. You’ve got a specific job to do, which includes helping others and adding to the music of humanity. So let’s get to it. Even when those hurdles come up, you take them head-on, with gratitude, instead of complaining or blaming. As Byron Katie says, “Life happens for you, not to you.” So the rocks fall. The monsters flap their hairy wings in the shadows. Do we give up? Do we fall back? Is it your business to give up? Nope! Your business combines owning your strengths, improving your weaknesses, and being a friend and teacher to those around you. Just like a fork, you’re here to serve. Dig in!
Sergeant Tucker Thompson, the protagonist of my latest novel HERE BE DRAGONS, serves in the Alliance Military Guard. Guardsmen live by a code, a warrior ethos, which they memorize and respect. Their Warrior Ethos states: I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. Guardsmen remember their business in the thick of battle, where Tucker finds himself in the belly of the Australian Outback, facing his unwritten past and his formidable future. But a Guardsman knows his business. Be powerful. Be consistent. Never quit. Finish the mission.
Now, what’s your business? Get to work! (And check out HERE BE DRAGONS. Maybe it will help you wrestle some dragons of your own.)
HERE BE DRAGONS
The conqueror acts. He plans. He plans backup plans.
And he beats the war drums.
Just like those voices demanded, I dug into the sand and the mud,
and readied for battle.
My lead, my call, my terms. My war cadence. My dragons.
Alliance Military Guard sent the order. Sergeant Tucker Thompson acquiesced. Hopping a plane to his long-lost Australian birthplace, he's been charged with his toughest mission yet. Thompson must rally his company of soldiers to prevent a new generation of weaponry from breaching the world's borders.
Pound the war drums. Rattle the cages. Here be Dragons.
Fierce yet sparkly, I help seekers find brave new worlds. The goal is magic, the medium is ink, and the fuel is coffee. And sometimes pizza. I teach English on the university level when I'm not dancing around the living room with my family, lifting heavy at the gym, traveling the planet, or binging superhero shows.
The INSURRECTION trilogy, HERE BE DRAGONS, and non-fiction inspirational IGNITE roll out perilous motives, twisty plots, and daring protagonists. Grab some real estate and your copy of my latest adventure, and follow along at KadeeCarder.com.
Here Be Dragons is a standalone novel, but it does follow my Insurrection trilogy. We see a few characters we met on those luxurious Caribbean beaches. Tucker was the romantic interest from the trilogy. After writing the trilogy, I felt like readers needed to know Tucker more, and he had to complete this assignment. Might as well follow along! No need to have read the trilogy; this book records its own wild adventure!

Here be dragons excerpts
“Be careful, Thompson. ‘Nough of us stayin’ down here forever.”
“No one is staying down here. That’s not the mission.”
“Aye, sir. Once I drop these off, I’ll be back to help.”
“Sounds good. Bring Parsnip. I’ll hold Exit off ‘til then.”
Nodding, Burkman shuffled out, Berserk sound asleep over his shoulder. A beam from above groaned.
Exit had vanished.
The door to the Vault clicked shut. As the door closed, the rumbling wall shuddered again, and after a sizzling pop, the beam overhead released itself from its bolts.
Shooting away from the wreckage, I coughed in all the dust as ceiling particles and chunks tumbled around the beam.
In the plunging darkness, amid the fog, my VISTAS declared with precision: the door was blocked. The easiest entrance had been barred. Panic, seething, whirling and awry, pitched through my chest. Couldn’t be marooned in that dungeon. My gut told me I’d have to find an exit, and it might be painful. In fact, it would. All mortals dwell inside armor containing their mettle. But in treasure hunting, in creating a life crammed with rollicking fires and austere winds, the armor gets dented. To leave behind that armor is possibly the greatest adventure of all.
Pivoting on my heel, I faced the door to the Vault. Here be life. Here be adventure, to whatever exit it may unearth.
Creeping through the sultry space, footsteps steady and stealthy, we readied our weapons. Blood and fire pulsed through my veins like they’d done so many times in training. This was the game, after all. These Alliance builders loved their long hallways.
Our rustling stirred up dust underfoot, and cement beams overhead groaned in disuse.
“How many feet‘re we underground ya think?” Hawk asked from the back of the line.
Flashlights and head lamps illuminated the way before us, stark tile work on the ground cracked and chipped. With every few feet we advanced, the walls became more fractured and peeling, as if a wave of tremors had rippled outward from the explosions of the bombing. Like vines along the paint, crevices in the cement grew substantial and entangled. Cautious and wary, we proceeded.
After several minutes of quiet steps echoing along the corridor, someone’s beam of light caught a fleck of darkness upon the wall.
“What’s that?” Norita asked.
Burkman shined his light to the scrawled paint upon the wall. The black paint dripped the warning: Beware.
